Open call for use cases

Working with concrete use cases that show real life applications of digital innovations to drive climate action is one of CLI's main pillars - learning from experience in the field.

CLI is looking to partner with use cases that demonstrate the potential of digital innovations, that have a strong climate impact, be it in the mitigation of greenhouse gas emission, the intelligent adaptation to climatic changes already happening or climate finance. The use cases should be based on strong concepts, robust partnerships and allow for the systematic extraction of learning for the benefit of other practitioners in the field, technology developers and policymakers.

Ideally, use cases are in the areas covered by our annual Navigating Reports, such as digitizing MRV, novel registry solutions and new business models for energy prosumers. We are also interested in use cases for climate change adaptation or climate finance. And we're interested in the use of distributed ledger/blockchain technology, using internet of things and sensors, artificial intelligence and advanced data processing methodologies.

CLI aims to partner with use cases to implement, test, share learnings and make recommendations concerning the use of technology in different contexts. They will also communicate about these experiences, challenges and lessons learned and share capacity.

For some use case partners, in particular those working in developing countries, we are able to provide limited funds for proving concepts, road testing, implementation, outreach and exchange of learnings with peers and policymakers.

The process to apply to the use case programme:

To apply, please submit a short (2 pages maximum) document that explains:

  • Applicant institution, responsible person, contact details
  • Activities targeted by the use-case (sector, activity, geographies)
  • Area of your experience in terms of (i) delivering innovative technology solutions, (ii) designing and implementing climate action and/or (iii) working in the field
  • Description of the technologies applied and their potential for scale
  • Overview of the benefits of the technology applied, how does it foster climate action and contribute to the implementation of the Paris Agreement?
  • Other benefits on sustainable development that may arise
  • Any potential harmful effects of the technology that require mitigation
  • Summary of progress to date, intended forward workplan and any barrier to progressing to the organizations involved
  • Indication on how the use case results can be used to improve climate action and inform policymakers
  • Information on indicative budget, required financial needs from CLI and information on co-financing. Available funding from CLI may vary between 30 - 120 k CHF depending on the resources, development status, implementation level etc. of the project. Use cases may also apply for CLI partnership without requiring financing.

Please send your application to info@climateledger.org under the reference CLI open call for use cases.
